How To Write A Book

The first step is almost always the most frightening. This definitely rings true when it comes to writing a book. Since publishing my first novel I have had conversations with hundreds of people that say they'd like to write a book. The sad reality is that most of them will never accomplish this goal; not because they can't but because they're too afraid. When people ask me the secret to writing I almost always tell them that it's all about firsts: first word, first sentence, first paragraph, first page, first chapter. Simply start, and then just write one word at...

Why Do Characters Die?

Why Do Characters Die?

Every reader wants a "Happy Ever After" story, right? Not exactly. Most readers want reality, even when reading fiction. Death is an integral part of reality, albeit extremely difficult for reasons beyond explanation, but let's not forget that there is also beauty in death. The end of a character's life in a novel (regardless of the point in which it occurs) reminds us how important his or her life was to the story and to the characters within the story. I Love March Madness

The month of March is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. Spring is on the way and college basketball is in full swing! The NCAA Tournament (March Madness) starts this week and I am working diligently to fill out my "perfect" bracket. Yeah, right! The odds are beyond slim. How about you? Book Review: The Storyteller (Jodi Picoult)

This novel was not what I expected and ultimately not my type of book, but once I start a story I like to finish it. This doesn't mean The Storyteller is not a good book or that other readers won't love it. I rate it a 3 out of 5 Stars because I feel like a 2 wouldn't be fair based on the fact that it's not the kind of story I like to read. One thing that bothered me was the way in which the author jumped between three different, yet connected stories, at times prolonging one particular story to...

Novel #3 is Underway!

Novel #3 is Underway!

Novel #3 (we will call it such until the "official" name release) is underway! This part of the writing process is extremely exciting and probably the most important. It's when I determine the storyline, the setting (hint: a small town in Eastern North Carolina), the characters names and their personalities, and so much more. The better prepared I am on the front end of writing the novel, the smoother things will run from now until the very moment you can hold the book in your hands!Make sure to follow me on all of my social media pages and subscribe to...
